Centerpiece Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information Centerpiece, a jigsaw puzzle game, uses and why. Centerpiece is made by Novelide LLC ("Novelide", "we", "us"). It covers every version of the game: Android, desktop and web browser. It is also published at https://novelide.com/policies/centerpiece-privacy-policy.
The short version
- You never sign up, and we never ask for your name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos or location.
- Your puzzles and progress stay on your device unless you play or share a puzzle online.
- Online play uses a random guest identity with a randomly generated name, such as "Sunny Otter". It is not tied to who you are, and it is not associated with any outside service.
- Centerpiece may offer optional ads that you can choose to watch for a reward. They are served by Google AdMob, which collects some information from your device, as described below.
- We do not sell your information, and the game has no analytics of its own.
- You can delete your online data at any time from Settings.
Information kept on your device
Centerpiece keeps your settings, puzzle progress, hints, play statistics and the puzzle pictures it has downloaded on your device, so the game is how you left it. None of this is sent to us, except what online play needs, described below. Your device's backup service may include it in a backup, under that service's own settings and policy.
Online play and puzzle pictures
Some features use our puzzle server: playing a shared puzzle with other people, sharing your own puzzle with Invite others, and listing and downloading puzzle pictures. The first time the game connects, the server gives you a guest identity: a random identifier, a randomly generated name and a colour. The game keeps it on your device as a token, so you have the same name next time.
While you are connected, the game sends the server only what it needs to run shared puzzles:
- your guest identifier and generated name;
- what you do in a shared puzzle: the pieces you pick up, move, place or put in your tray;
- where on the table you are looking and how far you are zoomed in, so others can see your pointer;
- the ready-made reactions you send, such as "thanks";
- the current state of a puzzle you choose to share with Invite others.
The server uses this only to run the game. It does not build a profile of you, and your guest identity is not associated with any outside service, including advertising.
What other players see
Other players at the same shared puzzle see your generated name and colour, your pointer, the pieces you move and the reactions you send. The list of open puzzles shows each puzzle's picture, number of pieces, progress, number of players and the generated name of whoever started it. There is no chat, and players cannot send each other messages or pictures.
Connection information
Like any internet service, our server receives your IP address when the game connects. We use it to deliver the connection and to protect the service, for example by limiting how many connections one address can open at once. Our servers keep logs for security and troubleshooting, which can include IP addresses, guest identifiers and the times of connections and requests. Logs are deleted automatically within 30 days. Counters used to limit abuse are kept only in the server's memory, are never written to disk, and are cleared whenever the server restarts.
Optional ads
Centerpiece may offer an optional ad just before you start a puzzle or just after you finish one, in exchange for a reward such as extra hints. Watching is always your choice. If you decline, the game carries on as usual, without the reward.
These ads are served by Google AdMob. To choose, show and measure ads and to prevent fraud, Google's software in the game collects information from your device. This can include your device's advertising ID, your IP address and the approximate location it indicates, information about your device and the game, and how you interact with ads. Google uses this information under its own policies: see "How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services" at https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and Google's privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
Where the law requires it, the game asks for your consent before ads are personalized, and lets you change your choice later. You can also reset or delete your device's advertising ID, or opt out of personalized ads, in your device's settings.
We do not give Google your guest identity, your puzzles or anything else the game keeps. The game is told when you have watched a rewarded ad, so it can give you the reward, and we receive overall reports of ad views and earnings.
How long we keep it
- Your guest token stays on your device until you delete your online data, clear the game's data or uninstall the game.
- A shared puzzle stays on the server while people play it. It is deleted when it is finished, or 24 hours after the last player leaves.
- Server logs are deleted within 30 days.
- Information Google collects for ads is kept under Google's own policies.
Deleting your online data
Open Settings and choose Delete my online data. After you confirm, the server deletes your guest identity and the data it holds for it:
- A shared puzzle you started passes to another player who is at the table at that moment, chosen at random. If nobody is at the table, the puzzle is closed and deleted.
- You are removed from any shared puzzle you are in. Pieces you placed stay placed, but nothing records that you placed them.
- Your guest token is deleted from your device. If you play online again, you get a new identity and a new name with no connection to the old one.
Entries already in our server logs are not removed early; they are deleted on the usual 30-day schedule. Puzzles saved on your device are kept. To remove those as well, clear the game's data or uninstall the game. If you uninstall without deleting your online data first, a shared puzzle you started keeps your generated name until 24 hours after its last player leaves, and is then deleted.
Sharing
We do not sell or rent information, and we do not give your guest identity, your puzzles or anything else the game keeps to advertisers or data brokers. Google collects information for ads directly, as described under Optional ads. Our server runs on computers we rent from a hosting provider, which stores the data for us and may not use it for anything else. We may disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of players or of the service.
App stores and websites
If you install Centerpiece from an app store, or play it on a website such as itch.io, that store or website processes information about your download or visit under its own privacy policy. We may receive overall statistics from them, such as how many people installed the game, but not personal information about you.
Security
Everything the game sends to our server is encrypted in transit. Guest tokens are signed by the server so they cannot be forged, and only the device holding a token can delete that guest's data.
Children
Centerpiece is made for a general audience. It does not ask anyone's age or personal information, online names are generated rather than typed, and there is no chat. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information about you, or to object to how it is used. Delete my online data deletes your guest identity and the data our server holds for it. For information Google collects for ads, use the choices described under Optional ads, or contact Google. Because we do not know who you are, we usually cannot find information about you from your name or email address. For any other request, contact us.
Changes to this policy
If we change how Centerpiece uses information, including which company serves its ads, we will update this policy and its effective date. If the game ever adds purchases or accounts, this policy will describe them before they are released.
